Philippians 3 – Jesus at the Centre
In this message from Philippians chapter 3, we explore two life-changing truths:
- In Christ, we are accepted.
- Jesus must remain at the centre of our lives.
The Apostle Paul reflects on his own dramatic encounter with Jesus Christ. Once convinced that his religious achievements made him right with God, Paul came to understand that true righteousness is found only through faith in Christ—not through human effort, good works or religious performance.
Throughout Philippians, Paul repeatedly encourages believers to rejoice in the Lord. Joy rooted in Christ lifts our eyes from ourselves to Him, reminding us that He is sovereign, faithful and in control, whatever our circumstances.
In verse 2, Paul warns the church to be on guard against those who distort the gospel by teaching that salvation depends on religious works or outward rituals. He lists his own impressive religious credentials, only to declare that they are worthless compared with knowing Christ. If anyone could have claimed acceptance before God through human achievement, it was Paul—yet he counted it all as loss for the sake of Christ.
This raises an important question for each of us:
Do you believe that anything you do—or fail to do—can make you more acceptable to God?
Many Christians live as though they must continually earn God’s approval, trying to meet an invisible standard. Yet the gospel tells us that, because of Jesus, we are already accepted by grace through faith. We can never repay the debt Christ paid on the cross. Instead, God invites us to rest in His love and allow Him to continue His transforming work within us.
Spiritual growth is not about striving to earn God’s favour but about responding to His grace. As God works in us by His Spirit, He shapes us more into the likeness of Christ.
God often chooses to use us most powerfully when we feel weak, inadequate or unprepared. Our usefulness to Him is not based on our strength or performance but on His grace. His love for us is not earned, and His acceptance of us does not fluctuate with our successes or failures.
Paul’s identity had once been rooted in his past, his status and his accomplishments. After encountering Christ, everything changed. His identity was now found in Jesus alone. The same is true for every believer. We are no longer defined by our past but by who we are in Christ—children of God.
Paul concludes that nothing compares with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus. His greatest desire became to know Him more deeply and to pursue the purpose for which Christ had called him.
As you listen to this message, consider these questions:
- Are you still trying to earn God’s acceptance, or are you resting in His grace?
- Is your identity rooted in your past, your achievements or your failures—or is it found in Christ?
- Are you looking back, or are you pressing on towards all that God has called you to be?
God has a unique purpose for each of us. As we keep Jesus at the centre, we can move forward with confidence, knowing that our acceptance is secure in Him and that He is faithfully leading us into all He has prepared for us.
